Ward Leads Bears to First NEWMAC Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jacqueline Ward had a career and game-high 21 points and Coast Guard used a late 7-0 run as the Bears picked up their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season beating Emerson 79-70.

The game was tied 65-65 with 4:49 left before Annabella Farabaugh capped a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer giving Coast Guard a 72-65 lead with 2:11 left to put the game away.

Farabaugh added 17 points and Breanna Wood 11 points for Coast Guard which snapped three-game slide and improved to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC. Kyra Hartman led the Bears with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Rachel Davey had 20 points while Natalie Clydesdale (16), Kate Foultz (15), and Quinn Madden (13) all scored in double figures for Emerson (11-6, 2-1) which had its five game win streak snapped. Clydesdale had a team-high eight rebounds.

Coast Guard shot 40.7 percent (24-59) while making five of 19 from 3-point range. Emerson was 27 of 64 (42.2 percent) from the floor while hitting eight of 21 from behind the arc. Coast Guard dominated the boards with a 47-29 edge on the glass including 13 offensive rebounds in the win.

Farabaugh hit back-to-back treys to open the game before the Lions ran off 13 straight for a 13-6 lead with 5:15 left in the first quarter. Emerson led 19-17 after one.

The Bears used an 11-0 run in the second quarter turning a 28-23 deficit into a 34-28 lead with 47 seconds left in the half. Coast Guard led 36-30 at the half.

Coast Guard started the second half with an 8-2 run taking a 44-32 lead following a trey by Zoe Riis-Fallica with 7:47 left in the third quarter. The Lions would respond with a 12-1 run cutting the deficit to 45-44 with 4:34 left in the quarter. Coast Guard led 59-55 after three.

Emerson would regain the lead 63-61 on a 3-pointer by Davey with 7:10 left. 

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday night when they play at Mount Holyoke in a NEWMAC game at 7:00.
