Geurtsen's Six Goals Help Bears Win NEWMAC Regular Season Championship

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Benner Geurtsen had a career-high six goals leading Coast Guard to its first ever outright New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship with a 14-11 win over Babson on Senior Day in the final game of the regular season. The Bears won a share of the regular season championship and top-seed in the conference tournament last season.

Coast Guard improves to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the NEWMAC while Babson drops to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

The Bears are the top-seed and will host a NEWMAC semifinal game on Thursday night. Babson will be the fifth-seed and play at the fourth-seeded Clark on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals and the winner will play Coast Guard on Thursday.

Coast Guard led 3-0 after the first quarter with goals from Will Iorio, Geurtsen and Mike McCaslin. Anthony Wyler's goal with 12:39 left in second quarter gave the Bears a 4-0 lead.

Babson would get on the board on a goal by Alex Lesher with 10:37 left in the first half. Owen Allen would add a pair of goals as the Beavers cut the deficit to 4-3 at the half.

The Bears wasted little time getting on the board in the second half as Jack Pope scored just 14 seconds into the third quarter giving Coast Guard a 5-3 edge.

The Beavers would explode for four goals in under two minutes, the first three by Samuel Mishkind. The final three of the four goals were in a span of just 50 seconds, the last by Mason O'Hanlon, to take a 7-5 lead with 7:26 left in the third quarter.

Coast Guard would dominate play to close out the third quarter outscoring the Beavers 4-1 with Geurtsen scoring three of those goals.

Geurtsen scored before Ethan Carpenter answered for Babson. Geurtsen would strike again before Matty Johnson tied the game 8-8 with 1:32 left in the third. Coast Guard would retake the lead 9-8 on a goal by Geurtsen with 28 seconds left to end the scoring in the wild third quarter which saw each team score five goals each.

Matty Johnson gave the Bears some breathing room with back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter and Coast Guard led 11-8 with 8:27 left.

Owen Allen had four goals to lead Babson while Mishkind added  three goals for the Beavers.

Trey Johnson (11-3) had nine saves and got the win in goal for Coast Guard.
