Behne, Thompson Lead Bears to 15-13 Win at Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. –  Jake Behne had three hits including a double and homer and he drove in a career-high five runs while Luke Thompson had four hits, drove in a pair and scored four runs as Coast Guard outlasted Dean in a slugfest 15-13 in a non-conference game.

The Bears snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 15-14 overall while Dean dropped its eighth straight and the Bulldogs are now 8-21 on the season.

Cody Fidler, Alex Cordes and Jeremy Lhotka each added two hits for the Bears in the win.

Ben Webster (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in relief as he allowed a run in the seventh while Dan Wolf picked up his first career save pitching the final two innings and allowed one run and Dean left runners runners on second and third to end the game.

Behne got the Bears on the board when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first. Dean would score twice in the home half for a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs added another in the second pushing the lead to 3-1.

The Bears pulled even at 3-3 in the third on an RBI single by Luke Thompson and an RBI double by Behne.

Coast Guard erupted for six runs in the fourth as Ankers walked with the bases loaded, Behne drove in a run with an infield single and a throwing error allowed two more runs to score. Reed Jenkins added an RBI single and Cody Fidler later scored on a wild pitch to give the Bears a 9-3 lead.

Dean got two in the fourth to make the score 9-5 before the Bears scored three times in the fifth as Thompson had an RBI single before Behne blasted a two-run homer to left to make the score 12-5.

The Bulldogs got one in the fifth and then added five in the sixth and one more in the seventh to tie the game 12-12.

Coast Guard took the lead in the eighth on an RBI single by Alex Cordes and added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as the Bears scored a run on a throwing error before an RBI single by Fidler gave Coast Guard a 15-12 lead. Dean would get one in the ninth to close the scoring.

Coast Guard is back in action on Friday when the Bears host Clark in a NEWMAC game at 2:30.
