Bears baseball swept by Salve Regina in Saturday twin bill

NEW LONDON, Conn. --

Saturday afternoon, Coast Guard men's baseball hosted a double-header against Salve Regina. The Bears lost a close game 1 with a final score of 5-2, and picked up another loss in game 2 with a final score of 5-0. Following these losses, Coast Guard falls to 13-17 and 6-9 in NEWMAC play. Salve Regina improve to 29-4 overall and 11-2 in the NEWMAC.

Junior infielder Carson Cho (Haymarket, Va.) got the Bears on the board first with an RBI double in the 3rd inning in the first game.  Salve Regina tied the game and then took the lead in the 5th inning, before Carson Cho tied the game again in the bottom of the 8th inning with a solo home run.

While it was Cho who supplied the offense, Raymond Priddy (Chico, CA) and Alexander Smith (Fairfield, OH) were excellent on the mound. Priddy started, going seven strong innings allowing just two runs on seven hits, striking out three. The freshman Smith then took over, throwing a scoreless 8th.

The Seahawks regained the lead in the top of the 9th inning on an RBI double. The very next pitch, Danny Rogers hit a two run home run to give Salve Regina a 5-2 lead which went on to be the final score.

The second game was all Salve Regina. A two-run home run to start off the 1st inning gave the Seahawks an early lead. They added another run on an error in the 2nd inning. Salve Regina went on to add another run in the 3rd and 4th inning while holding Coast Guard to just five hits on the day. Final score of the second game 5-0 in favor of the Seahawks. On their senior day, the Bears got three excellent performances off the bench from seniors. Relievers Conor Watts (Mahopac, NY) and Harrison Milbert (Kingston, MA) combined for 3.1 scorless innings pitched allowing just one hit each. On the offensive side, Tate Scherer (Mystic, CT) delivered a pinch hit single to lead off the 9th.

With just four games remaining in the regular season, Coast Guard men's baseball will play their final game of NEWMAC play Tuesday, April 28th at home against WPI. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30pm EST.
