Clark Hangs on for Victory Over Bears

Worcester, Mass.-- Coast Guard women's basketball dropped a 67-64 setback in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday afternoon at Clark University. The Bears fall to 6-16 overall and 4-9 in the NEWMAC. Clark improves to 10-12 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

Freshman Emma Puddington scored a game-high 15 points with six rebounds to lead the Bears. Senior Micaela Martinelli added 14 points and Breanna Wood had a team-high, nine rebounds.

Ogechi Ezemma led Clark with a double-double, with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Maya Kerstetter added 13 points and had five rebounds for the Cougars.

Clark outscored the Bears 19-15 in the opening quarter. Senior Johanna Moolenaar tied it 9-9 at 3:05 and a Martinelli layup with 1:05 remaining, gave Coast Guard a 15-14 advantage. Kerstetter and Hannah Favaloro both added layups for Clark in the final minute to give the Cougars a 19-15 advantage at the end of the first.

Puddington scored the opening three points for the Bears in the second quarter to bring the Bears within one, 20-19. Cori Oullette sunk a three at 4:29 that sparked a 7-2 run for the Cougars, giving them a 31-23 advantage. Clark extended to take a 37-27 lead at the half.

The Bear's comeback fell short, as they outshot Clark 20-15 in the third and 17-15 in the fourth. Junior Zoe Riis-Fallica brought Coast Guard within two, 43-41, with a three pointer at 5:22. Sophomore Brenna Farrington tied the game 43-43 with her layup at 4:45. Clark ended the third quarter on a 7-2 run to hold a 52-47 edge over the Bears.

Clark held on to their throughout the fourth quarter until Breanna Wood made both free throws to tie it up 64-64 with 33 seconds remaining in the game. Kerstetter ended the game for Clark with three free throws, giving them the 67-64 victory.

Coast Guard is back in action on the road on Saturday, February 9 at 1:00 PM when they travel to Wellesley.
