Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Annabella Farabaugh's layup at the buzzer lifted Coast Guard to a 58-56 win over archrival Merchant Marine as the Bears also clinched the Superintendent's Trophy for the 2018-'19 season.
The Bears have beaten Merchant Marine in all 10 athletic contests during this academic year to win the Superintendent's Trophy for the fifth straight season.
Farabaugh led the Bears with 15 points off the bench while Zoe Riis-Fallica added 11 and Micaela Martinelli had all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter of the win. Martinelli registered her second straight double-double and fourth of the season as she grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go with five assists for the Bears.
Kaleigh D'Arcy led the Mariners with a game-high 17 points while Lauren Hunter added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Mariners led 47-42 with 8:27 left before ran off seven straight to take the lead 49-47 on a steal and layup by Brenna Farrington with 6:11 remaining.
Merchant Marine led 54-53 before Martinelli's 3-pointer with 1:35 left gave Coast Guard a 56-54 lead. The Mariners would pull even on a putback by Hunter with 14 seconds left.
Coast Guard would inbound the ball with 0.6 seconds left and Martinelli found a cutting who laid it off the glass for the win.
The Bears raced out to a 22-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Mariners would outscore Coast Guard 19-5 in the second quarter including the final 13 points of the half to take a 32-27 lead at the break.
Merchant Marine led by as many as seven in the third quarter (34-27) before seven straight tied the game 34-34 with 3:23 left in the third quarter. The Mariners led 44-41 after three quarters.
The Bears shot 38.5 percent (25-65) from the floor in the win and connected on 6 of 21 from 3-point range while Merchant Marine was 18 of 56 (32.1 percent) from the field and hit 2 of 8 from behind the arc.
Coast Guard improves to 6-15 overall while the Mariners saw their six-game winning streak snapped dropping to 17-2 on the season.
