Bears Battle But Fall Short on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Christina Antonakakis came off the bench and had 18 of her career-high tying and game-high 22 points in the second half leading MIT to a 73-65 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Senior Day at the Academy

MIT improves to 18-7 and 12-4 in the NEWMAC while the Bears finish the season 7-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

Kylie Gallagher added 19 points while Taylor V'Dovec finished with 12 points in the win for MIT. Kara Holinski led the team with seven rebounds and seven assists. The Engineers did most of their damage in the paint outscoring the Bears 42-20 while taking advantage of 27 Coast Guard turnovers.

Micaela Martinelli led Coast Guard with 14 points while Kyra Hartman (11) and Annabella Farabaugh (10) also scored in double figures for the Bears. Breanna Wood had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with her eight points and team-high five assists.

In a game that saw 18 lead changes and the Bears played for their NEWMAC tournament lives, the Bears led 56-55 with 7:52 left following a layup by Wood.

MIT would score eight straight taking a 63-56 lead with 4:50 remaining and hold on for the win.  

Coast Guard led 19-14 after one quarter before MIT used a 10-2 spurt to start the second quarter taking a 24-21 lead with 5:34 left in the half. MIT led 31-26 before a 7-2 run by Coast Guard knotted the game 33-33 at half.

The Bears scored the first five points of the second half to match their largest lead of the game, 38-33, the game was tied 50-50 after three quarters.

MIT shot 42.6 percent (29-68) in the win while connecting on 6 of 22 from 3-point range while the Bears were 21 of 56 from the floor (37.5 percent) and shot a season-high 62.5 percent from 3-point range hitting 10 of 16 with Martinelli and Zoe Riis-Fallica each going 3 for 5 from downtown.

Martinelli and Johanna Moolenaar played in the final games of their Coast Guard careers. Martinelli leaves with 954 points, 12th all-time at Coast Guard and her 531 rebounds are the 14th most in program history.
