Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. --- Mary Sweet hit .786 and had a career-high tying 12 kills leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard, which won by scores of 25-14, 25-10, 25-15 improves to 16-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play while the Pioneers drop to 6-19 overall and 0-8 in the NEWMAC.
Angelou Dunton added eight kills, Veronica Hine had a match-high 13 digs and Amanda Dake added 12 while Noelle Tursky had a match-high 27 assists for the Bears in the win.
Evi Evgeniou led Smith with five kill and 12 assists to go with seven digs while Kimani Freeman had a team-high 11 digs for the Pioneers.
Smith would get off to a fast start scoring the first six points of the match before the Bears later answered with six straight of their own to tie it 7-7. Coast Guard led 14-12 before four straight capped on back-to-back kills by Sweet gave the Bears an 18-12 lead it would be the start of a 10-1 run as the Bears won the opener 25-14.
In the second set, the Bears would start quickly scoring five straight ending on consecutive service aces from Dunton. The Bears led 12-8 and then scored seven straight and 12 of the next 13 points for a commanding 24-9 lead and won 25-10.
The Bears held a 10-9 lead in the third and would run off seven straight taking control 17-9 and closed out the match with a 25-15 win.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when they host WPI in a NEWMAC game at 6:00.
