Box Score New London, Conn.-- Coast Guard women's basketball fell to WPI 67-44 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday night. The Bears drop to 5-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play. WPI improves to 8-11 on the season and 3-8 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Micaela Martinelli led the Bears with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-15 from the field and 2-4 from three point range. Sophomore Annabella Farabaugh scored 11 points for the Bears and freshman Kyra Hartman added six rebounds.
Bailey Savage led the Engineers with 15 points, going 6-12 from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc. Alyssa Paul added 10 points in the victory and Spencer Vinson scored nine points with a game-high nine rebounds.
Farabaugh and Martinelli combined for 10 of Coast Guard's 12 points in the opening quarter as the Bears led 12-11. WPI answered in the second quarter by outscoring the Bears 17-11 as held a 28 - 23 advantage heading into halftime.
WPI scored the opening nine points of the half as they extended their lead 37-23. Vinson and Savage combined for 11 points in the quarter as they outshot the Bears 25-16. Martinelli made a layup with 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter but Coast Guard trailed 53-39.
The Engineers put the game away as they outscored the Bears 14-5 taking the 67-44 final.
WPI shot 47.2% (25-53) from the field and 50.0% (11-22) from three point range. WPI held the advantage in rebounds, 42-26.
The Bears are back in action on the road on Saturday February 2 at 1:00 PM at Emerson.
