Box Score Norton, Mass. -- Coast Guard women's basketball dropped a 71-59 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on the road on Saturday afternoon at Wheaton. The Bears drop to 5-12 overall and 4-5 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton improves to 8-9 on the season and 3-6 in conference play.
Mikayla Pucci scored a game-high 24 points to lead Wheaton. Natalie Wind added 17 points for the Lyons and Sara McLeman chipped in with a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Micaela Martinelli led the Bears with 18 points and four rebounds. Zoe Riis-Fallica added 13 points with five rebounds for Coast Guard.
Wheaton outscored Coast Guard 28-15 points in the first quarter. Coast Guard was just trailing by three, 18-15 when Annabella Farabaugh shot from behind the arc at 2:46. Sadie Shore countered with a layup at 2:35 that sparked a 13 point run to end the first quarter, 28-15.
Wheaton extended their lead in the second quarter, outshooting the Bears, 14-11. Martinelli led the Bears through the second quarter with eight points and Kyra Hartman sunk a three to round out the Bears second quarter points. The Lyons balanced offense gave Wheaton a 42-26 advantage at the halftime break.
The Bears outshot the Lyons, 17-12 in the third quarter. Coast Guard came out of halftime with a 13-4 run to bring them within six points, as they trailed, 45-37. With 2:44 Sara McLeman made a layup that sparked a run for the Lyons extend their lead to 54-43 to end the third quarter.
Coast Guard had another strong quarter to attempt to comeback, but Wheaton held on, outshooting the Bears 17-16. Brenna Farrington sunk a three pointer for the Bears at 3:54 to cut the Coast Guard deficit, 60-54. With less than a minute remaining, Wheaton scored five free throws, to extend to the 71-59 final.
Wheaton shot 45.2% (28-62) from the field as Coast Guard was 31.5% (23-73) from the field. Wheaton held a 46-42 advantage in rebounds.
Coast Guard will travel to Smith on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:00 PM.
