Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Mary Sweet hit .800 with eight kills while classmate Amanda Dake hit .600 with match-high 10 kills leading Coast Guard to its 10th straight win, a 3-0 win over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard hit a season best .344 as they won 25-11, 25-22, 25-14.
The Bears, who received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 25 Poll, now stand at 13-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The 13-1 start is the best since 2009 when the team also started the season 13-1. Mount Holyoke drops to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Freshman Lauren Hatfield tied a career-high with eight kills, sophomore Veronica Hine, the reigning NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week, led the way with a team-high 11 digs while junior Makenna Martin led the Bears with a match-high 30 assists.
Sarah Caggiano and Jamesa Allen had five kills each to lead the Lyons while Cameron Graham had a match-high 12 digs for the Lyons.
In the opening set, Coast Guard would score 10 straight points with sophomore Heather Miller serving to turn a 13-9 lead into a 23-9 edge and win 25-11. Dake would lead the way with five kills as the Bears hit .400 in the set.
The Lyons led the second set 17-16 before the Bears took the lead for good scoring four straight points including back-to-back aces from freshman Lauren Hatfield for a 20-17 lead. The Bears would win 25-22.
In the third set, the Bears would take control scoring seven straight with Martin serving to open up at 17-7 lead en route to the 25-14 win.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday at MIT when they take on the host Engineers at noon and Manhattanville at 2:00.
