Bears Sweep Archrival Merchant Marine

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Bridget Boyle hit a match-high .364 and had a team-high 10 kills as Coast Guard ran its win streak to seven straight with a 3-0 win over archrival Merchant Marine to pick up another point in the Superintendent's Trophy Standings.

The Bears won by set scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-16.

Coast Guard improves to 10-1 overall its best start since the 2009 team won 11 straight to start the season. The Bears now lead Merchant Marine 4-0 in the 2018-'19 Superintendent's Trophy standings after its three wins on Saturday (Men's Soccer, Men's and Women's Cross Country).

Freshman Destiny Johnson added seven kills while freshman Amanda Dake and junior Makenna Martin led the Bears with nine digs each. Martin had a match-high 18 assists in the win.

Freshman Taylor Gilbertson had a match-high 12 kills to lead Merchant Marine (2-3) while freshman Brittney Pinzon led the Mariners with 17 assist and nine digs.

In the first set, the Mariners led 12-10 before the Bears ran off six straight points with Martin serving for a 16-12 lead. Merchant Marine trailed 22-21 when Coast Guard scored the final three points with two kills including the set winner coming from Dunton for the 25-21 win.

In the second saw plenty of momentum swings. The Bears led 10-8 when Merchant Marine scored six of the next seven to take a 14-11 advantage. Coast Guard would come right back with six straight with Hine serving for a 17-14 lead before the Mariners scored four straight to regain the lead 18-17. Coast Guard would score six straight and eight of the final nine points for a 25-19 win.

The Bears would score six of the final seven points in the third set to close the match with a 25-19 win.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday at Emerson when they take on the host Lions at noon and Endicott at 2:00.
