Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard battled back from a two goal halftime deficit to knock off Clark 9-5 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Cougars fall to 4-4 and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Anthony Wyler had a game high three goals all coming in the second half. Sophomore Riley McNulty finished with three points with a goal and one assists while junior Benner Geurtsen scored two goals. Freshman Will Iorio registered two points with one goal and one assist.
Sophomore Chris Rasco had a team high two goals for Clark while senior Will Mandracchia finished with two assists. Juniors Jack Pierce, Brandon King and Sam Wogan each scored a goal as well.
The Cougars controlled the pace of the game early on as they responded to an earlier Coast Guard goal with tallies from Rasco and King as they held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Geurtsen found the back of the net with 9:43 left in the first half to tie the game before Rasco scored his second goal of the game followed by Pierce scoring with 22 second remaining in the quarter giving Clark the 4-2 lead heading into the locker room.
The Bears took control of the game in the third quarter scoring five unanswered goal to take the 7-4 lead. Wyler had two goals over this stretch while McNulty had two assists.
Coast Guard made their strong third quarter stand up as they scored two more goals in the fourth and held the Cougars to one goal and 10 total shots in the second half to secure their first NEWMAC win of the season and avenge a 9-5 loss from last season.
Junior Trey Johnson (6-2) made seven saves allowing five goals. Johnson is second in the NEWMAC in goals against average (6.69).
Junior Nathan Maselek (4-4) made 12 saves allowing nine goals. It is his eighth consecutive game to start the season with double digit saves.
Junior Colin Cashin won 8-17 face-offs with three groundballs. Junior Tom Bleifuss led the defensive unite causing a season high five turnovers and picking up a team high four groundballs.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, April 4th when they travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts to take on the MIT Engineers. Opening face-off is 7:00 PM.
