Bears Drop Regular Season Finale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Taylor V'Dovec had a game-high 14 points while Kara Holinski added 13 leading MIT to a 58-38 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, the regular season finale for both teams.

Coast Guard ends the regular season 13-12 overall and 7-9 in the NEWMAC while MIT improves to 15-9 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

The seventh-seeded Bears will play at second-seeded WPI in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament on Wednesday night at 5:30.

WPI beat the Bears 59-46 on Jan. 11th in Worcester.

Senior Gillian Gerton led Coast Guard with 11 points while junior Micaela Martinelli added nine points and seven rebounds in the loss. Freshman Brenna Farrington led the Bears with eight rebounds.

MIT led 14-12 after one quarter and the game was tied 16-16 with 7:31 left in the half before the Engineers ended the half on a 3-2 run for a 29-18 lead.

The Bears would not score in the second half until Farrington hit a 3-pointer with 4:43 left in the third quarter making the score 33-21. It would be Coast Guard's only field goal in third quarter as the team was 1-13 shooting in the quarter and trailed 38-23 after three.

Coast Guard shot 24.5 percent (13-53) and made 6 of 28 from 3-point range while MIT shot 46.2 percent (24-52) while connecting on 4 of 14 from behind the arc.
