Wellesley Beats Bears 3-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Yasmine Reece hit .390 and had a match-high 20 kills while Lauren Gedney added 18 kills leading Wellesley to a 3-1 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Blue won by scores of 25-21, 26-28, 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears dropped their fifth straight and are now 14-7 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Junior Angelou Dunton led the Bears with 14 kills to go with 12 digs while sophomore Bridget Boyle finished with nine kills.

Sophomore Veronica Hine had a team-high 17 digs while freshman Amanda Dake added 16 digs. Freshman Nikki Sefcik led the Bears with 23 assists to go to with 10 digs.

The Bears used a 5-1 run turning a 9-9 tie into a 14-10 lead in the opening set. Coast Guard maintained the lead 17-13 before the Blue ran off four straight to pull even at 17. Coast Guard led 19-18, but Wellesley would score five straight for a 23-19 lead and the Blue won the opener 25-21.

The second set was back back-and-forth and was tied at 10 before Wellesley opened up a 15-11 lead. The Blue led 19-15 when Coast Guard came alive running off five straight and eight of the next nine for a 23-20 lead. Wellesley however scored the next three to tie it 23-23. The Bears had three set points, but came up empty before on the fourth set point, freshman Destiny Johnson's kill gave the Bears the 28-26 win.

The Blue jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third and increased the lead to 14-6 and won 25-19.

Coast Guard fell behind 10-6 in the fourth, but scored eight of the next 10 points taking a 14-12 lead. Trailing 15-13, Wellesley would score eight of the next nine points with three kills from Reece to take control 21-16 and close the out the match 25-18.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they play at pair of road games beginning at Johnson & Wales, the third ranked team in the nation, at 1:00 and Roger Williams at 5:00.
