NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Coast Guard men's lacrosse team topped Emerson18-6 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

With the win the Bears improve to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Lions falls to 4-6 on the season and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard set a single game record with 35 combined points breaking the program record of 34 set earlier this season against Mitchell.

Sophomore Jack Pope had a game high six points with five goals and one assist. On his second goal of the game, Pope broke Justin Huemme's record of 49 career goals and took sole ownership of the top spot. Pope now has 53 career goals.

Freshman Riley McNulty also set a program record netting his 31st and 32nd goal of the season setting a program record for most goals in a single season. Sophomore Benner Geurtsen had four points with three assists and a goal while classmate Cole Hudson scored a hat trick with an assist. Sophomore Anthony Wyler, Matt Carmine and Matt Nagle each had a goal and an assist and senior Blaise Curtis and sophomore Ian Logan wrapped up the multi-point scorers for Coast Guard with a goal and two assists each.

Emerson was led by sophomore Cameron Radenberg who had three points with two goals and one assist. Freshman Paul Seguin also scored two goals while sophomore Jared Brush and senior Austin Max each had a goal. Freshman Sam Dearborn dished out one assist.

After a scoreless five minutes to start the game McNulty and Pope each scored a goal 20 seconds apart to take an early 2-0 with 10:37 to go in the opening period.

The Lions however answered as Radenberg and Max each scored goals around a Hudson tally for Coast Guard making the score 3-2 with 5:51 to play in the first quarter.

The Bears took control of the game from that point forwarder scoring six unanswered goals to finish the first period including a goal from Wyler with one second to go in the quarter.

After a quiet second quarter with only one Lions goal Coast Guard would out score Emerson 9-3 in the second half for the 18-6 conference win.

Freshman Charles McAllister (1-0) earns his first career win playing the middle two quarters, making four saves on seven shots and allowing three goals. Sophomore Trey Johnson started in goal allowing two goals on three shots and making one save. Sophomore Connor Hoehle played the final quarter making three saves on four shots and allowed one goal.

Sophomore Bailey Kennedy (4-6) made 15 saves on 33 shots allowing 18 goals.

The Bears defense caused a season high 19 turnovers which is second most in a single game in program history. Sophomore Connor Ellis had a game high five, freshman Justin Edwards had four and sophomores Tom Bleifuss and Ryland Chapman each had three. 

Coast Guard also picked up 42 ground balls, which is their third highest total this season. Ellis led the way with a season high nine pick ups while Edwards, Bleifuss, sophomore Colin Cashin and senior Dan Fiorvanti each had three. 

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, April 26th, when they host Mass. Maritime in NEWMAC action. Opening face is 7:00 pm.
