Red Hot Bears Clinch NEWMAC Tourney Berth With Road Win

BOSTON, Mass. –  Junior Gill Gerton recorded her third straight double-double and her ninth of the season as she finished with a game-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds as Guard secured a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament with a 63-50  win over Emerson in a game played at Suffolk.

Freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica added 15 points, sophomore Johanna Moolenaar had career-highs with 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench and junior Jill Bray added 12 points and a team-high five assists in the win for Coast Guard. Freshman Breanna Wood had a game-high 12 rebounds recording 10 or more rebounds for the fifth time in the last seven games.

Coast Guard has won seven of its last eight to improve to 10-14 overall and 7-8 in NEWMAC play while Emerson drops to 11-13 overall and 4-11 in conference play.

The Bears will be the sixth seed and play a road game in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC tournament on Feb. 22nd.

Natalie Busch led Emerson with 14 points while Charlie Boyle finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Coast Guard led 32-19 at halftime and scored the first four points of the third quarter to open up a 36-19 lead with 8:33 left. The Bears led 46-30 after three and cruised to the win.

The Bears shot 39.7 percent from the floor (27-68) making just 4 of 21 from 3-point range while Emerson shot 27.5 percent (19-69) making 5 of 27 from behind the arc. Coast Guard held a 54-39 edge in rebounding.

The game was tied 6-6 before the Bears scored six straight started on back-to-back buckets by Moolenaar and the Bears led 12-8 after one quarter.

Coast Guard started the second quarter using a 14-4 run to open up a 26-12 lead on a layup by Moolenaar with 3:57 left in the first half. Five different players scored during the run for the Bears.

Coast Guard closes out the regular season on Saturday at Mount Holyoke in a 1:00 tip.
