Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Ava Adamopoulos had 13 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and Springfield used an 11-1 run to start the final quarter as the Pride snapped Coast Guard's five-game winning streak with a 61-53 win in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Springfield has won six of its last seven to improve to 17-6 overall and 12-2 in the NEWMAC while the Bears slip to 8-14 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Adamopoulos, who added seven rebounds, was 11 of 18 from the floor, 7 of 9 in the second half. Sophomore Gracie Restituyo had a double-double in the win as she added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds while sophomore Chelsea McAllister added ten points for the Pride.
Junior Gill Gerton had her seventh double-double of the season as she led Coast Guard with 15 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore Micaela Martinelli added 13 points and freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica had a game-high six assists for the Bears.
Martinelli scored the Bears first five points to start the game before Riis-Fallica hit a 3-pointer giving Coast Guard an 8-6 lead with 4:30 left in the opening quarter.
Coast Guard, which was 5 of 9 from 3-point range in the first quarter, used a 10-4 run to end the quarter and led 21-13 after one.
In the second quarter, both teams struggled offensively. The teams were a combined 6-31 from the field in the quarter and the Bears missed all five 3-point attempts.
Gerton's bucket gave the Bears a 23-13 lead with 9:12 left in the half, but Coast Guard would manage just one more field goal in the quarter. Springfield used a 9-2 run cutting the deficit to 25-22 with 3:18 left in the half. The Bears led 27-24 at halftime as both teams were 10 of 29 (34.5 percent) from the field in the opening half.
Coast Guard took a six point lead, 38-32 with 3:45 left in the third, following consecutive baskets by Gerton. The Bears led 40-37 after three quarters.
Springfield used an 11-1 run to start the fourth and took its first lead since the opening minutes 44-41 on a 3-pointer by senior Lexi Windwer with 7:11 left and extended it to 48-41 on back-to-back layups by Adamopoulos with 5:29 left.
The Pride shot 42.6 percent (23-54) in the win including 52 percent in the second half (13-25). Springfield was 2 of 10 from 3-point range. Coast Guard finished the game 19 of 59 from the floor (32.2 percent) and 8 of 24 from behind the arc.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday when they host archrival Merchant Marine in the final non-conference game of the season at 3:00.
