Bears Clinch NEWMAC Tourney Berth; Beat Smith on Senior Night

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Angelou Dunton had a match-high seven kills and 12 digs as Coast Guard secured a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament for the 20th straight season with a 3-0 win over Smith on Senior Night, the final home match of the season for the Bears.

Coast Guard, which won by set scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-16, improves to 15-9 overall and 5-4 in the NEWMAC while Smith drops to 9-14 overall and 0-9 in conference play.

The match marked the final home games in the careers for Michelle McGill, Emma Saunders and Madison Scott, who have won 70 matches overall and posted a record of 32-10 for a .762 winning percentage at home over the past four years.

Sophomore Alex Kempf had a match-high four blocks, Saunders added five kills while freshman Veronica Hine had a match-high 12 assists in the win for Coast Guard.

Freshman Amy Hagen led Smith with six kills to go with eight digs. Sophomore Helena Wiatrowski led the Pioneers with 10 digs and three aces.

The Bears jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set and after four straight points cut the lead to 10-7, Coast Guard ran off five straight with Martin registering a pair of aces for a 15-7 lead and cruised to the 25-15 win. Boyle led the way with four kills in the opening set.

Smith held a 12-11 edge in the second set before the Bears scored 10 straight behind the serving of Boyle, who had three aces in the run, giving Coast Guard a 21-12 lead en route to a 25-14 win.

The Pioneers got off to a fast start in the third set as they scored the first four points and led 10-6 before Coast Guard scored nine straight with Scott adding a trio of aces as the Bears took a 15-10 lead and won 25-16.

The Bears are back in action on Thursday night when they travel down the road to play a non-conference match at Conn. College beginning at 7:00.
