Bears Battle to 2-1 Record on the Day

NORTHFIELD, VT - No. 24 Coast Guard went 2-1 on the day earning victories over Norwich (42-11) and Western New England (52-0) and one loss to No.3 Johnson and Wales (24-10) at a quad meet hosted by Norwich University.

The Bears are now 5-3 on the season in dual meets in a week that saw them go against two teams in the top ten in the nation (Roger Williams and Johnson and Wales).

Senior Matt Vieira was the only wrestler on the day to go 3-0 for the Bears. Vieira pinned Tyler Ayers of Norwich in 2:47 and in dramatic fashion took sudden victories from Austin Roche of Western New England (8-6) and Jamiel Stapelton of Johnson and Wales (12-9).

Sophomore Nick Remke finished up the week 3-0 at 165 with two victories on the day. He earned a victory over David Goodall of Western New England with a fall in 5:51 and a 12-4 major decision over Dale White of Johnson and Wales. Remke already beat No.4 Alec Golner this week with a 11-5 decision.

Junior No.6 Chris Sullivan picked up his first two wins of the week pinning Benjamin Swanson of Norwich in 2:51 and earning a close 4-3 decision over Daniel McBrinn of Johnson and Wales.

Every Coast Guard wrestler that stepped foot on the mat today at least earned one victory between the three matches. Senior Phil Azzari (197: 2-1) junior Earl Roberts (125: 2-1) and senior Matt McAllister (141: 2-1) were the other three multi match winners for the Bears.

Coast Guard rolled through Norwich and Western New England on the day but had a tough battle against No. 3 Johnson and Wales. Early on the Bears looked primed for an upset as Vieira, Sullivan and Remke all took victories to start the match for an early 10-0 lead.

Johnson & Wales however came back to win the final seven matches one their way to the 26-10 victory.

Coast Guard is back in action next Sunday when they travel to Johnson & Wales for the New England Duals on Sunday January 29th.
