NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton scored two goals in the fourth quarter to break an 8-8 tie and top Coast Guard 10-8 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss the Bears drop to 8-4 on the season and1-2 in conference play while the Lyons improve to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Freshman Jack Pope tallied a team high three points with two goals and one assist while senior Justin Huemme added two goals of his own. Huemme is now two away from tying his single season program record from last season of 22. Junior Blaise Curtis had a goal and an assist. 

Freshman Matt Morgan had a game high three goals for the Lyons while classmate Josh Talanian had two of his own. Sophomore Scott Whear had a goal and two assists and freshman CJ Leighton added two more goals.

The Bears held an early 4-1 advantage after the first quarter as freshman Anthony Wyler, senior Trent Moon, Huemme and Pope all had goals.

Wheaton tied the game going into the half, blanking Coast Guard in the second quarter 3-0 on goals by Leighton, Morgan and Whear.

At the 7:40 mark of the third quarter, it looked as if the Lyons had taken control of the game as they scored four goals in a row to take a 8-5 lead. The Bears, however stormed back scoring the three final goals of the quarter to tie the game going into the final frame. 

Wheaton's defense stepped up in a big way in the fourth quarter as Wheaton scored two goals,  and fended off 13 Coast Guard shots to take the 10-8 win.

Freshman Trey Johnson (7-3) gave up double digit goals for the first time this season allowing 10 goals on 17 shots and making seven saves. Johnson leads the NEWMAC in goals-against average (6.66) and is second in goals allowed (66). As of April 15th, Johnson's goal-against average was sixth in the nation.

Senior Ryan Clair (5-5) tied a season best with 18 saves and held the Bears to eight goals and scoreless in both the second and fourth quarter. He is third in the conference with an 8.61 goals-against average.

Coast Guard dominated in shots (45-28) but were unable to take advantage of their four man-up opportunities.

The Coast Guard defense caused 11 turnovers with freshmen Ryland Chapman and Connor Ellis and Curtis each causing two. The Bear's defense is having an excellent year as they are 16th in the nation in caused turnovers per game.

Freshman Colin Cashin won 7-11on face offs while freshman Mike Doucette was 12-21. Cashin is second in the conference with 120 won face offs. 

Coast Guard in back in action on Wednesday with their final home game of the season against defending champion Springfield on Wednesday. The Bears will honor their seniors at 7:00 pm.
