Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Babson topped Coast Guard for the second time this season winning by a final score of 81-61 in New England Women's and Men Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Merriman Gymnasium.
With the loss the Bears fall to 11-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play while the Beavers improve to 16-5 and 12-1 in NEWMAC competition.
Senior Meghan Fornaro led Coast Guard with 17 points and three steals. Senior Torie Sutherland had 14 points and five rebounds while sophomore Jill Bray had seven points, shooting 3-6 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Brenna LeGacy came off the bench for Babson to lead the team with 17 points and five rebounds. Senior Kristen Ferola added 16 while junior Giovanna Pickering had her second double double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bears ran out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter as sophomore Michelle Hernandez drilled a three pointer with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Beavers however finished the quarter off on a 12-5 as LeGacy made a jumper right before the end of the period giving Babson an 18-17 first quarter lead.
Coast Guard kept the score within two midway through the second quarter after a basket by freshman Shelby Threlkeld 27-25 with 5:49 remaining in the half.
Babson, however continued to hold the advantage and pushed their lead to seven at the end of the half with Pickering hitting a jumper with 12 seconds to go making the score 42-35.
Both teams traded baskets at the beginning of the third quarter but the Beavers would increase their lead over the final two quarters to as many as 22 as they wrapped up an 81-61 victory.
Coast Guard was 26-65 (40%) from the floor and shot 19.2% (5-26) from three. The Bears were unable to get to the free throw line as they only made 4-6 (66.7%) from the stripe.
Babson shot 38.7% (29-75) overall and 3-7 (42.9%) from beyond the arc. The Beavers dominated the glass outrebounding Coast Guard 53-34.
The Bears are back in action on Monday, February 8th when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a nonconference matchup. Opening tip is 7:00 pm.
