Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Meghan Fornaro had a game-high 27 points while classmate Torie Sutherland added 17 points and ten rebounds, her eighth double-double of the season, leading Coast Guard to a 66-58 win over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Senior Day in the regular season finale for both teams.
The duo won the 63rd game of their career tying the most by any class (2008) at the Academy. Coast Guard will be the #3 seed in the NEWMAC tournament and host #6 Wheaton on Wednesday at 7:00.
Fornaro moved into third place on the Bears' all-time scoring list passing Lis Bosma ('05), who had 1,444 points. Fornaro now has 1,448 career points.
Coast Guard improves to 15-10 overall and 11-5 in the NEWMAC while MIT drops to 17-8 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
Junior Gill Gerton added six points and ten rebounds while sophomore Jill Bray finished with nine points in the win for the Bears.
The Bears used a 17-2 run in the second quarter turning a 21-18 deficit with 7:27 left into a 35-23 lead with 2:18 left in the first half. Coast Guard led 37-27 at halftime.
MIT scored the first six points of the game and Coast Guard took its first lead 11-10 on a basket by Fornaro with 3:52 left in the first quarter. The Bears led 18-16 after one.
Coast Guard used a 10-0 to take its largest lead of the game 50-34 with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
The Engineers would respond quickly scoring the final 12 points of the third quarter including three free throws by freshman Kristen Ngan after the horn sounded to cut the deficit to 50-46.
MIT would close to within three twice, the later begin 56-53 with 4:08 left in the game following a basket by Ngan.
Coast Guard would take command scoring the next seven points extending the lead to 63-53 with 48 seconds left.
The Bears shot 38.1 percent in the win (24 of 63) and made 6 of 16 from behind the arc while MIT was 23 of 56 from the floor (41.1 percent) and made 2 of 11 from 3-point range.
Ngan led the Engineers with 16 points while senior Maya Ramachandran had a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Junior Liana Ilutzi added nine points and a game-high seven assists.
