Bears, Lyons Play to Thrilling Tie

Box Score
NEW LONDON, Conn. -  Coast Guard, behind senior Alex Lane's three goals, came back from a three goal deficit to tie Wheaton 4-4 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

With the tie the Bears, ranked 11th in New England, moves to 9-3-3 on the season and 2-2-2 in conference play. The Lyons are now 9-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the NEWMAC.

The hat trick by Lane is the first for the program since the 2013 season when Robert Copeland scored three goals in the first half, leading Coast Guard to 6-0 victory over SUNY Maritime.

Wheaton got the scoring started in the 30th minute as freshman Neil Fitzgerald managed to get his head on a bouncing ball in the Bears penalty box looping the ball into the left corner for his first goal of the season.

In the second half the first six goals of the period were scored just over 11 minutes apart from each other.

Freshman Brock Hassett tied the game for Coast Guard as he dribbled into Wheaton's half, beat a defender and then rifled a low shot to the left corner past a diving junior goalkeeper Erik Wisniewski for her first collegiate goal making the score 1-1 at the 50:34 mark.

In the 56th minute freshman J.D. Souza sent a cross into the Bears penalty box from the right side. Senior Kevin Davis made a well timed run and drove a header into the back of the net for his third goal of the season, snatching the lead back for the Lyons at 2-1.

Just over two and a half minutes later Davis stepped up to take a penalty kick after a Coast Guard hand ball. Davis stutter stepped and then placed the ball into the right corner for his second goal of the game and the fourth of the season with 58:00 minutes on the clock.

49 seconds later the Lyons pushed their advantage to three as senior Graham Davidson sent a long service into the Coast Guard penalty box from Wheaton's half of the field. Junior Louis Chavez charged into the box, put a touch on the ball and ripped a shot from the right side into the opposite corner for his fourth goal of the season and 4-1 lead for the Lyons.

Lane started the comeback 23 seconds later as sophomore Noah Harper drove a ball into the box from the right side. Lane rose up and headed the ball over Wisniewski for his first goal of the game making the score 4-2 at the 59:12 mark.

In the 62nd minute after a foul in the Wheaton penalty box, Lane stepped up and stroked the penalty kick into the left corner for his second of the game.

The Bears completed the comeback at the 81:47 mark as sophomore Patrick Palermo-Re knocked a cross in from the left side. A Wheaton defender nearly got their foot to the ball but just slipped past him to Lane who headed it home for his third goal of the game and his seventh goal of the season tying the score at four.

Lane is now tied for fourth in the NEWMAC with seven goals on the year and fifth with 18 points.

Coast Guard had the best opportunity in the first overtime as Lane slipped a pass through the center of the Lyons defense to junior Luke Telang who pushed the ball into Wheaton's penalty box. Telang ripped a shot past Wisniewski but the ball went wide of the left post and out of play.

Wheaton had the majority of the chances in both overtime periods but could not connect on any of their eight shots forcing freshman goalkeeper Dakota Harich to make three saves closing out the 4-4 tie.

Junior Jake Sorenson started in goal for Coast Guard making two saves on six shots on goal. Harich (3-1-1) came into the game in the second half making four saves on four shots on goal.

Wisniewski (8-3-1) made two saves on six shots on goal.

Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, October 25th as they play their final nonconference game of the season against UMass Dartmouth. Kickoff is 7:00.
