Bears Win Fifth Straight to Clinch NEWMAC Tournament Berth

BOSTON, Mass. –  Freshman Angelou Dunton and senior Susan West each had 13 kills as Coast Guard won its fifth straight and clinched a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament with a 3-1 win over host Emerson.

Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 25-18 to improve to 14-9 overall and 5-3 in the NEWMAC while Emerson drops to 15-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Junior Madison Scott added 11 kills while classmate Emma Saunders and freshman Alexi Deane each added eight kills. The trio each had three blocks in the win.

Freshman Makenna Martin had a match-high 43 assists, junior Michelle McGill led the way with 21 digs while sophomore Hailye Reynolds finished with 18 digs.

The Bears scored five straight to take a 9-5 lead in the first set and led 18-15 before Emerson scored five of the next six point to take a 21-20 lead. The Lyons led 23-22 before Coast Guard scored the final three points for the 25-23 win in the opener.

Emerson jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the second game and later used a 5-1 run as the Lyons doubled up the Bears 16-8. Coast Guard would respond with five straight as Scott had a pair of kills closing the gap to 16-13. The Lions led 20-18 before running off four straight en route to the 25-20 win.

Coast Guard led 5-1 to start the third game before Emerson closed to within 13-12. The Bears would score 11 of the final 13 points including the final six points to cruise to the 25-14 win.

The Lions built a 12-7 lead in the fourth game and Emerson led 15-12 before Coast Guard once again went on a big run scoring seven straight with Reynolds serving to take a 19-15 lead. Emerson would score three straight making the scored 19-18, but the Bears would scored the final six points to close out the match with a 25-18 win.

Coast Guard, which has won seven of its last eight, is back in action on Friday night at Susquehanna at 6:00.
