Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.- Sophomore Patrick Palermo-Re scored two first half goals leading the Bears to a 2-0 win over Mass. Maritime in nonconference action.
With the win Coast Guard improves to 9-3-2 on the season while the Buccaneers fall to 6-7-1 overall.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead in the 11th minute as sophomore Alex Hall attempted a shot inside Mass. Maritime's penalty box. His shot was blocked by the Buccaneers defense but the clearance went right to Palermo-Re who slotted home his first goal of the season.
At the 17:51 mark Hall once again broke free and rifled a shot on goal from the right side. Junior Mike Pruchnik dove to his right making the sprawling save but could not coral the rebound. Palermo-Re was once again there to one time the ball into the back of the net giving the Bears the 2-0 advantage.
Mass. Maritime nearly got a goal back as a deep service was sent into the Coast Guard penalty box from a free kick. The ball was headed away by the Bears defense but the clearance was settled by freshman Adam Crawford at the top of the Coast Guard 18 yard box. Crawford hit a shot through traffic but junior goalkeeper Jake Sorenson was able to find the shot and make the save snuffing out the attack.
The second half saw little offense from either team as both teams only combined for three shots giving the Bears their ninth win on the season.
Sorenson (5-2-2) made two saves on two shots on goal. It was Sorenson's fourth shutout and the team's seventh overall. Coast Guard's .49 goals against average is tenth in the nation and leads the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) while also leading the league with seven goals allowed on the season.
Junior Mike Pruchnik (5-5-1) started the game for the Buccaneers, making one save on three shots on goal. Sophomore Connor Murphy relived Pruchnik in the second half stopping the only shot on goal he faced. Pruchnik is second in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in saves with 74)
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, October 22nd, with a pivotal NEWMAC game against Wheaton. Kickoff is 2:00.
