Bears Earn Second NEWMAC Win of the Season

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. -  Coast Guard made one shot on goal over the course of the game count as they topped MIT 1-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on homecoming weekend.

With the win the Bears improve to 7-1-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. The Engineers drop below .500 on the season with a record of 4-5 and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard had an early opportunity as sophomore Quintin Parsons hit a cross to the near post from the right side. Sophomore Alex Hall made a strong run to the front post, but a sliding MIT defender beat him to the ball and just knocked it out of his reach and away from danger.

Shortly after that attempt the Engineers attempted to clear another cross away but this time the ball fell to senior Alex Lane at the top of the MIT 18 yard box. Lane took one touch and ripped a shot from 20 yards away. Freshman goalkeeper Cole Hoffer managed to get his hands to the shot but the strike was too hard and he pushed it into the roof of the net for Lane's fourth goal of the season just 9:16 into the match.

Midway through the half the Bear's nearly had another opportunity inside the Engineer's penalty box as sophomore Patrick Palermo-Re hit a cross into the center of the box from the right side. Hoffer came out to smother the skipping cross but ended up spilling the ball out in front of him. Senior Patrick Hanrahan nearly jumped on the loose ball for a shot but the MIT's defense cleared the ball away.

The Engineers attempted to tie the game late in the half as sophomore Wesley Woo snuck a pass through to sophomore David Wu on the right side of Coast Guard's penalty box. Wu found a little space and attempted a shot but sophomore Greg Burnham came sliding into block the shot and clear it out of play making the half time score 1-0.

Junior Luke Telang nearly found space early in the second half as he beat two MIT defenders in their attacking third. Telang was one touch away from being in open space but sophomore Garrett Souza came across the top of the Engineer's 18 yard box and slid in to keep the ball away from Telang and squash the attack.

The Engineers continued to push for the tie as junior Vickram Goel collected a rebound 30 yards out from the Coast Guard goal and struck a hard, rising one time shot that was on goal but was to high and went over the bar.

The game ended in a flurry as MIT continued to press starting with freshman Isaac Perper getting free down the left side in the 89th minute and sliding a cross towards the front post senior Joseph Han cranked a shot towards the near post but put it on the wrong side of the post.

The Engineers managed two corner kicks in the closing minutes but Coast Guard thwarted each attempt with a save by junior Jake Sorenson and a blocked shot by the Bear's defense to close out the game and give Coast Guard their second NEWMAC win of the season.

Sorenson (4-2-1) made two saves on two shots on goal. MIT outshot Coast Guard 14-3 but Bears defense managed to keep the majority of the shots off frame. This was Sorenson's fourth shutout of the season and the teams seventh. Coast Guard leads the conference with a .39 goals against average and their seven shutouts are also tops in the NEWMAC.

Hoffer made zero saves on one shot on goal. The Bear's lone goal was only his sixth goal he has allowed all season.

Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, October 4th as they host Albertus Magnus in nonconference action. Game time is 6:00 pm.
