Fast Start, Gerton Lead Bears Past Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Gill Gerton had career-highs with  20 points and seven steals and Coast Guard jumped out to a 19-2 lead and never looked back en route to a 59-36 win over Wellesley in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Gerton was 9 of 12 from the floor including 2 for 2 from 3-point range in the win.

Coast Guard would score 29 points in the first quarter, and led 29-11 after the first. The Bears would score just 30 combined in the final three quarters in the win.

The Bears won for the third straight time improving to7-5 overall and 4-1 in the NEWMAC while Wellesley dropped its fourth straight and the Blue are now 3-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Senior Meghan Fornaro added 18 points and a team-high four assists while Gerton and Fornaro each had six rebounds to lead the Bears.

Senior Torie Sutherland had four points moving into ninth on the Bears' all-time scoring list with 990 points passing Amy Harmel ('05), who had 988 career points.

The Bears finished 23 of 63 from the field (36.5 percent) including 9 of 22 from behind the arc while Wellesley was 12 of 53 (22.6 percent) from the floor and made 4 of 20 from 3-point range.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and took a 19-2 lead following a 3-pointer by Gerton with 4:28 left in the opening quarter. The Bears led 29-11 after the first quarter with Gerton leading the way with 12 points making all five field goal attempts in the first quarter.

Sophomore Jill Bray hit a 3-pointer with 9:30 left in the second quarter giving the Bears a 32-11 lead. Coast Guard would then miss its next nine field goals before a Fornaro bucket with 2:06 left in the half as the Bears scored just nine second quarter points. The Blue would however manage just four points in the quarter and the Bears led 38-15 at halftime.

The Bears shot 44.1 percent in the first half (15-34) while making 6 of 13 from 3-point range. The Blue were just 6 of 30 from the floor (20 percent) and hit 2 of 11 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. Gerton led the Bears with 14 first half points while Fornaro added 13.

Wellesley would score the first six points of the second half making the score 38-21 as the Bears did not score until a layup by Gerton with 4:24 left in the quarter the first of 11 straight points pushing the lead to 49-21, the Bears led 49-23 after three quarters.

Coast Guard is back in action on Thursday when the Bears host Springfield in a NEWMAC game at 7:00.
