Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. –Senior Ashley Dumont had a match-high 14 kills while freshman Stephanie Bullard added a career-high 11 kills as Coast Guard snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-20 to improve to 5-4 overall and pick up its first NEWMAC win of the year improving to 1-2 in conference play. Smith drops to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Bears improved to 5-0 at home on the season.
The opening set was tied 13-13 before the Bears ran off four straight for their biggest lead 17-13. The Bears led 22-17 before Smith scored five of the next six to close to within 23-22 and the Bears held on 25-23.
In the second set, Smith jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and Coast Guard took its first lead 12-11. Coast Guard led 19-17 and scored five of the next six en route to a 25-19 win.
Smith led 12-10 in the third set, but Coast Guard 11 of the next 14 points for a 21-15 edge and closed out the match with a 25-20 win.
Senior Emily Gilland led the way with ten digs while senior Maggie Hine had a match-high 37 assists to lead the Bears.
Macarena Rojas, Jenna Rubin and Elizabeth Peay each had seven kills to lead Smith while Julie Voorhees had a match-high 12 digs and Mei-Li Smith led the Pioneers with 21 assists.
Coast Guard is back in action on Thursday night at WPI at 7 p.m.
