Box Score 2 WORCESTER, Mass. – Coast Guard dropped both matches losing today, losing to Clark 3-0 and falling to Western New England 3-2.
With the losses, the Bears fall to 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Cougars improve to 9-0 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. The Golden Bears notched their fifth with of the season at 5-3.
"We still have a lot of work to do to get where we need to be," said Coast Guard head coach Mike Bynon. "We will get better, it just might take longer than some people my have hoped."
Match One: Clark 3 Coast Guard 0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-19)
Sophomore Marina Ramos has a match high 30 kills leading Clark to a straight set victory over Coast Guard.
Sophomore Summer Adams led the Bears with 22 kills while senior Ashley Dumont added 18 kills of her own. Sophomore Madison Scott led all players hitting at a .353 clip while contributing 17 kills. Sophomore Michelle McGill had a team high 10 digs while sophomore Michelle Hernandez had a team high 10 assists.
Coast Guard was up halfway through the first set as a bad set by Clark gave the Bears a 12-10 lead.
The Cougars would answer going on a 11-2 run to take a 21-14 lead. Ramos had four kills over this stretch.
Coast Guard climbed back in within four (21-17) and then within three (23-20), but Clark was able to close out the final set with the final two points and a 25-20 win.
Clark dominated from the get go in the second set running out to 19-9 lead before a Coast Guard time out. The bears attempted to gain back momentum scoring the first point out of the time out but could not make up any more ground as the Cougars finished off the second set 25-13.
In the final set the Bears were within one (7-6) after a block by Scott and sophomore Emma Saunders.
Clark, however, pushed the lead to three (11-8) and continued to stretch the lead to as many as eight at 24-16. Coast Guard scored three straight points to make the score 24-19 but could not complete the comeback Ramos finished off the game, set, and match with a kill for a 25-19 and a 3-0 Cougar win.
Match Two: Western New England 3 Coast Guard 2 (8-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-20, 15-7)
Senior Kelsey Armstrong led all players with 12 kills in the battle of the Bears as Western New England topped Coast Guard 3-2.
Hernandez has a team high 20 assists and 10 digs. Dumont and Scott each had eight kills for Coast Guard.
Coast Guard looked dominate in the first set as they scored the first six points on their way to a 17-6 lead before the Golden Bears took a timeout. The Bears finished off the first set on a 8-2 run for a 25-8 win.
Coast Guard was only down one (8-7) after a block by Dumont and Hernandez in the second set, but Western New England went on a 8-1 run for a 16-8 lead.
The Bears could only manage eight more points in the second set as the Golden Bears knotted things up at 1-1 with a 25-14 win.
The back and forth theme continued as Coast Guard scored 13 of the first 20 points of the third set, for a 13-7 lead.
The Golden Bears scored three straight points to make the score 13-10, but the Bears closed out the third set winning 25-17, taking a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw eight ties as both teams swapped the lead multiple times all the way to 18-18. Western New England took control going on a 7-2 run, forcing a deciding fifth set.
After a ball handling error by junior Jessica Cincero the Bears climbed within one at 8-7 and forced a Golden Bears timeout.
Western New England came out of the timeout and took back the momentum as they scored the final 7 points to take the fifth set (15-7) and the win 3-2.
Coast Guard returns to action this Tuesday, September 22nd, as they host Smith in NEWMAC play. The match begins at 7:00 pm.
