Bears Upset Bid Falls Short

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard was down only two goals going into the half against first place Babson, but could not complete the comeback falling to the Beavers by a final score of 13-7.

With the loss the Bears finish up their first season playing at the NCAA level with an overall record of 4-10 and a 2-5 record in the NEWMAC. Babson raps up its first NEWMAC regular season championship going 10-6 overall and undefeated in the conference with a record of 7-0.

Bears were led by freshman Alec Groff who had two goals. Over the last three games Groff has scored five goals; the previous 11 games he only had three goals. Senior Pat Dreiss and junior Justin Huemme each had a goal and an assist while juniors Louis DePaolis, Robert McKenna, and sophomore Kyle Carosotto all registered goals.

Junior John Harrison had a game high five points scoring two goals and dishing out three assists. Junior Scott Doten had two goals and an assists while senior Kyle Barsalou and junior Spencer Low added two goals each.  Freshman Axel Brown had a goal and an assist.

Babson jumped on the board first as Brown took a pass from Harrison to net the first goal of the game at the 7:28 mark.

The Bears would answer just under two minutes later as Justin Huemme found Groff bringing Coast Guard level at 1-1. Justin Huemme took it himself a minute later giving the Bears a 2-1 lead with 4:38 left in the quarter.

Babson took a 3-2 lead with two successive goals by freshman Taylor Segreti and Low 56 second apart from each other.

With the quarter coming to an end Dreiss found space and scored his first goal of the game with 18 seconds left making the score 3-3.

In the second quarter Babson took advantage Coast Guard penalties midway through the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals, two coming on man up opportunities for a three goal advantage.

With under three minutes left in the half DePaolis was able to cut into the lead scoring sixteenth goal of the year. Just 23 seconds later Carosotto took an outlet pass from freshman goalie Matt McAllister and took it all the way himself scoring his only goal of the game and making the score 6-5 with 2:14 on the clock.

Harrison scored the final goal of the quarter made the halftime score 7-5.

Babson came out in the second half scoring the first four goals giving them a five point edge. The Beavers also locked the Bears down defensively only allowing two goals in the second thirty minutes, wrapping up their first regular season conference championship since 1990 by a final score of 13-7.

Senior Nick Chicoine had a game high six ground balls adding to his NEWMAC leading total of 112. He is tenth in the nation with 8.36 ground balls per game.

Freshman Kurt Caminske started in goal for Coast Guard making six saves and allowing three goals through the beginning of the second quarter. After a Caminske injury, McAllister subbed in making eight saves and allowed 10 goals taking the loss and bringing his season record to 0-1.

Freshman Jordan Shapiro made nine saves and allowed seven goals raising his season record to 10-6. Shapiro has allowed single digit goal totals in nine games this year and has not given up more than seven goals in his last five games.

Congratulations to the first senior class to play at the varsity level: Pat Dreiss, Nick Chicoine, Steve Kidwell, Matt Panciocco, and Zach Wells.
