Coast Guard Tops Mass. Maritime for Second Win in a Row

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Behind hat tricks by junior Louis DePaolis and sophomore Quinn Hathcock the Bears won their second game in a row by beating the Buccaneers 14-5 in NEWMAC action.

With the win Coast Guard is now 4-9 overall this season and 2-4 in the NEWMAC. Mass. Maritime's record drops to 6-9 this year and 1-5 in the conference.

The three goals for DePaolis and Hathcock were career highs and DePaolis added an assist to give him a game high four points. Sophomore Blaise Curtis scored two goals and had one assist while senior Pat Dreiss and junior Justin Huemme each had a goal and an assist. Freshman Matt Huemme had two goals.

Freshman Keaghan Bartley led the Buccaneers with two goals while junior Anthony Kurylak, freshman Robert Steinweg, and sophomore Joseph Landy each added one goal.

It was all Bears through the beginning of the first quarter as DePaolis got the scoring started only 19 seconds into the game as senior Nick Chicoine found Depaolis for his first goal of the game. Just over a minute late Dreiss connected with Matt Huemme to give Coast Guard an early 2-0 lead.

Hatchock, Curtis, and Matt Huemme all rattled of goals before Mass. Maritime was able to get on the board. Kurylak managed to stop the bleeding right before the end of the quarter as he netted his 28th of the year.

The Buccaneers mounted a comeback outscoring the Bears 3-1 in the second quarter. With 5:57 left in the quarter sophomore Joseph Landy took a pass from sophomore Conor Greany for his first of the game. Bartley then scored two goals under thirty second apart from each other making the score 5-4 with 2:15 left in the half.

Curtis pushed the lead back to two right before the half as he scored an unassisted goal for a half time score of 6-4.

Coast Guard took all the momentum back in the third quarter scoring five unanswered goals in the period.  DePaolis had two goals for the Bears over this stretch while Hathcock, Dreiss, and freshman Robert McKenna all added tallies.

It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as Coast Guard took advantage of an extra man opportunity with a goal by freshman Alec Groff making the score 12-4.

Steinweg scored the Buccaneers final goal of the night before goals by Justin Huemme and Hathcock made the finals score 14-5.

Senior Nick Chicoine had another outstanding night in the faceoff circle winning 17-21. Chicoine is third in the conference with 169 faceoff's won this year. He is also tenth in the nation with 8.36 groundballs per game.

Freshman Kurt Caminske made eight saves on 13 shots faced. Over the last two game Caminske has allowed a total of nine goals. He raises his season record to 3-4.

Junior James Klose made 11 saves on 25 shots faced for the loss. His season record is now 3-4.

The Bears return to action this Saturday, April, 25th when they host Babson for their final home game of the season. Game time is 1:00 at Cadet Memorial Stadium.
