Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Bears won their final game of the year as Coast Guard topped arch rival Merchant Marine 14-5 in non-conference action.
Sophomore Niki Kruger had a game high four points with three goals and an assist. Kruger finishes the year with 29 goals and three assists. Senior Ruby Surgent also scored a hat trick for Coast Guard giving her 22 goals on the season. Junior Lucy Daghir and freshman Dari Mckenna had two goals and an assist while freshman Cecelia Hosley scored two goals.
Freshmen Sarah Milafsky and Madeline Thibeault each had two goals for the Mariners while freshman Maya Lindeman added the teams other goal.
The Bears were relentless in the first half as they scored 12 unanswered. The 12 goals are the most Coast Guard has scored in one half and also the first they have held an opponent scoreless this season.
Kruger got the scoring started for the Bears as she netted the first goal of the game within the first three minutes.Eight second later McKenna took a pass from senior Holly Moore and scored teams second goal of the game. Surgent continued the scoring spree as she netted her first of the game only 16 second after the second.
It would be more of the same for Coast Guard as Mckenna scored the teams next goal and assisted the following giving the Bears a 5-0 lead under five minutes into the game.
Kruger and Hosley both scored two goals each through the rest of the half while Moore, Surgent, and Daghir each added goals giving Coast Guard a 12-0 lead going into the second half.
Merchant Marine came out in the second half scoring four straight goals. Milafsky netted two goals while Lindeman and Milafsky each added goals making the score 12-4.
Daghir would end any sign of a Mariner's come back as she scored 3:56 left in the game followed by assisting sophomore Sierra Webb's first goal of the game.
Thibeault would score one final goal for Merchant Marine making the final score and wrapping up the Bears fourth win of the season. Coast Guard had a winning record in non-conference games this season with a 4-3 record..
Freshman Angel Fay made four saves on nine shots faced allowing five goals. Fay finished up her first year with a 4-11 record making 127 saves, a 40.6 save percentage, and a 12.32 goals against average.
Junior Rachel Smith made eight saves on 22 shots faced dropping her season record to 1-9.
Going into next season the Bears only graduate three players and will bring a experienced roster back for their second season in NEWMAC play.
