Bears Cruise Past Falcons

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Led by four players scoring in double digits, Coast Guard beat Albertus Magnus by a final score of 80-57 extending their school record winning streak to nine games.

Senior Alexi Howland was the top scorer for Coast Guard as she had  18 points eight, eight rebounds, and four assists. Junior Torie Sutherland racked up her fifth double-double of the season as she had 14 points and 14 rebounds, including the 500th of her career. She now has 510 rebounds since she started playing at the Academy. Junior Meghan Fornaro added 17 points of her own and tacked on three assists which brought her to 200 for her career. Senior Dani Knox had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Albertus Magnus was led freshman Olivia Bolden who had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Angelina Piccirillo came off the bench to score 11 points.

The Bears jumped out to a fast eight point lead as a layup by senior Leigha Steinbeck made the score 10-2 at the 16:32 mark.

The Falcons slowly climbed back into the game as they brought Coast Guard's lead to two on a three pointer by sophomore Alexa Riley with 8:24 left in the half.

It was all Bears for the rest of the half as they went on a 23-10 run to end the half and took a 41-24 lead into the intermission.

Coast Guard pushed their lead to 25 as Howland was fouled on a made three point shot, and sunk the free throw to complete the four point play with 13:28 on the clock.

Albertus Magnus would only get as close as 18 the rest of the way and the Bears would stretch their lead to as many as 27, closing out an 80-57 nonconference victory.

Coast Guard shot 44.8% (30-67) from the floor and made 11-30 (36.7%) from beyond the arc. The 11 three pointers are the most for the Bears this season.

The Falcons were 12-36 (29.9%) from the field while going 33.3% (2-6) from three. Albertus Magnus was able to find a slight advantage in the paint as they outscored Coast Guard 34-30 down low and had 15 second chance points.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, February 18th, when they host Clark in NEWMAC play. The game will tip at 7:00 pm.
