Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Gill Gerton recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds leading Coast Guard to a 59-45 win over Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Gerton had a huge first half finishing with ten points and 13 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Senior Torie Sutherland added 13 points and nine rebounds, freshman Jayla Joyner finished with a career-high 12 points and a career-best nine rebounds while senior Meghan Fornaro added ten points in the win as Coast Guard improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Gerton recorded the fifth double-double of her career and her second this season. Smith drops to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Bears now hold a 21-19 edge in the all-time series with the Pioneers.
Coast Guard used an 11-2 run to end the first quarter for a 19-8 lead.
The Bears led 32-18 on a layup by sophomore Michelle Hernandez with 3:03 left in the half before the Pioneers scored the final eight points of the half to trail 32-26 at the break.
Coast Guard used an 8-2 to start the third quarter to open up a 40-28 lead with 4:21 left.
Smith would get a close as seven at 50-43 with 3:21 left in the game, but the Bears would scored nine of the final 11 points for the win.
The Bears dominated the glass with a 53-31 advantage with 21 offensive rebounds.
Coast Guard was 22 of 68 from the floor (32.4 percent) while making 2 of 14 from behind the arc.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wheaton for a conference game at 1:00.
