Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Senior Meghan Fornaro scored her 1,000th career point but Coast Guard fell to UMass Dartmouth 73-59 in the finals of the 2015 Fairfield Inn and Suites Tournament.
Fornaro becomes the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 points. She had a team high 23 points on 8-17 shooting with five rebounds and four assists. Senior Torie Sutherland scored 11 with eight rebounds while sophomore Gill Gerton added 10 points and nine rebounds of her own.
Junior Megan Ronaghan had a game high 27 points shooting 11-18 from the floor for the Corsairs. Senior Beth Castantini scored 21 points with four three pointers.
It was a back and forth game in the first quarter as their was nine lead changes in the period alone.
A Gerton layup with 47 seconds left tied the game at 16, but Castantini gave UMass Dartmouth the lead with a three pointer with 17 seconds left in the quarter.
The Corsairs pushed their lead to five midway through the second half on a layup by sophomore Chelsea Houlihan making the score 27-22. The Bears, however, would go on a 10-5 run capped off by a layup by Fornaro for her 1000th point and tying the game at 32 with 49 seconds left in the half.
UMass Dartmouth took the lead back right at the end of the half as Castantini netted a jumper to beat the buzzer and give the Corsairs a 34-32 halftime lead.
UMass Dartmouth once again jumped out to a lead at the start of the third quarter as they took a six point lead at 38-32 with 8:24 showing on the clock.
At the 4:04 mark Sutherland found Fornaro with a pass who laid it in capping off an 8-2 run tying the game at 40.
The teams entered the fourth quarter with the score 45-45, but the Corsairs would dominate the final period outscoring Coast Guard 28-14 and taking the victory 73-59.
The Bears shot 33.8% (23-68) from the floor and 3-24 (12.5%) from beyond the arc. Coast Guard held a slight advantage in rebounding, 50-47.
UMass Dartmouth was 28-76 (36.8%) from the floor and shot 26.7% (4-15) from the three point line. The Corsairs took advantage of 25 turnovers by the Bears turning them into 29 points.
Fornaro was named to the All-Tournament team scoring a combined 51 points in the two games at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Tournament.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday, November 20th, when the play Dickinson College at the Ithaca College Invitational. Tip off is 1:00.
