Box Score MILTON, Mass. — Freshman quarterback Riley Cote in just his second career start accounted for all six touchdowns as he threw for 351 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for two touchdowns leading Curry to a 42-14 win over Coast Guard in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) game.
Coast Guard's record setting junior quarterback Derek Victory left the game with an injury after the first series and Curry scored touchdowns on four straight possessions to end the first half. The Colonels had 329 yards of offense in the first half and the Bears were held to just 79 total yards in the opening half.
Cote was 16 of 22 for 252 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half and finished 24 of 35 for 350 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
The Bears had their three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the NEFC while Curry improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Adam Davis was 13 of 25 for 117 yards in relief of Victory while freshman Ethan Goldcamp was 1 of 5 for 12 yards in the first action of his career in the fourth quarter.
The Colonels finished with 533 yards of total offense, 182 on the ground, while the Bears finished with 193 total yards, 141 of those in the air.
"I have always said we can beat some very good teams by one point, but we can also get beat by 20," said Coast Guard head coach Bill George." We are not a powerhouse team. Curry is very talented team and Cote was a first-team All-State quarterback and he played like that. They also with a very good back and they pushed us around."
Curry moved the ball into the red zone the first three times it had the ball. The Colonels turned it over on downs the first time. Curry's second possession was following a bad snap on a punt and started at the Bears 20-yard line but senior Joe Rizzardi intercepted Cote in the end zone.
Following a Coast Guard punt, the Colonels got on the board going 60 yards in six plays capped on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Cote to Anthony Nastasi on 4th-and-1 on the first play of the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
Cote would push the lead to 14-0 on an 11-yard touchdown run capping a 67-yard drive with 9:19 left in the first.
On the next possession, Cote scored on a 7-yard run with 5:23 left for a 21-0 lead. The key play on was a 64-yard pass to Jake Cawlina on 3rd-and-5 to get the ball down to the Coast Guard 18.
Coast Guard on its first five possessions punted four times and had a bad snap on a punt. The Bears moved the ball into Curry territory on its next possession, but turned it over on downs at the 38-yard line with 2:34 left in the half.
Cote would throw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Cawlina with 1:07 left in the half for a 28-0 lead.
On the opening drive of the second half, Cote threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to junior Nate Chartrand with 11:45 left in the third quarter.
The Bears got on the board when Davis threw his first career touchdown, a 10-yard pass to senior Jordan Groff with 6:57 left in the third quarter.
Following an exchange of punts, Cote threw his fourth touchdown of the game, a 1-yard strike to Nastasi with 9:13 left for a 42-7 lead.
Coast Guard freshman running back Colin Cashin closed the scoring with his first career touchdown, a 6-yard run with 1:36 left. Senior Mark Behne's 47-yard punt return set the Bears up at the Colonel 29-yard line.
Groff (27 yards) and sophomore tight end Cody Bain (23 yards) each had four receptions to lead Coast Guard. Senior Mike Clancy had ten carries for 32 yards to lead the Bears on the ground.
Cawlina had six receptions for 156 yards and a touchdowns in the win while Nastasi had 10 catches for 76 yards and two scores. Senior Jordan Shairs led the Colonels with 23 carries and 131 yards.
Sophomore cornerback Will Daniels had seven tackles to lead the Bears defense while Rizzardi added six solo tackles to go with his interception, which was the only turnover in the game.
Coast Guard is back in action next week when the Bears host Nichols with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
