Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Kendall Jacobs had a match-high 15 kills leading Wheaton to a thrilling 3-2 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Wheaton won its third straight this season and third straight over the Bears to improve to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in league play while Coast Guard had its five-game win streak snapped dropping to 13-6 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.
The Lyons won by game scores of 25-22,13-25, 28-26, 24-26, 15-13.
Wheaton ran off five straight points for a 16-11 lead in the opening game. Coast Guard would get as close as three on three occasions and closed to 24-22 before falling 25-22.
The Bears never trailed in the second game. Coast Guard leading 8-6 scored four of the next five for a 12-7 lead and when leading 17-13 put the game away by scoring the final eight points behind the serving of sophomore Michelle Hernandez, who had a pair of aces in the run.
The Lyons had an early 10-6 lead in the third game before the Bears responded with four straight to pull even at ten. Wheaton led 14-13 when the Bears would use a 7-1 spurt to take their first lead of the game and open up a 19-15 lead. Coast Guard led 20-16 before Wheaton scored three straight to pull to within 20-19. The Bears led 24-21 before Wheaton fought off three straight game points to tie it at 24. The Lyons had their own game point leading 25-24 but a kill by senior Ashley Dumont knotted the score at 25. Wheaton had another game point leading 26-25 before a kill by senior Maggie Hine pulled the Bears even at 26. The Lyons would finally win the set 28-26.
With the fourth game tied 11-11, Wheaton appeared to take control using a 7-2 spurt to take and 18-13 lead. Coast Guard would however score nine of the next 11 points and led 22-20. The Lyons would score four of the next five and had match point leading 24-23, but a kill by Scott tied it at 24. The Bears took advantage of an attack error to get a game point of its own and a kill by Hine gave the Bears a 26-24 win to force the fifth game.
Wheaton led 8-4 in the fifth game and maintained it leading 11-7 before three straight points pulled the Bears to within 11-10. Coast Guard trailed by one the rest of the way until a service error gave Wheaton the 15-13 win.
Junior Susan West led the Bears with 12 kills to go with 12 digs while sophomore Michelle McGill had a team-high 23 digs. Hine had a team-high 27 assists along with 14 digs while Scott had nine kills and match-high seven blocks.
The Bears are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Endicott for a 6 p.m. non-conference match.
