Bears Drop Two at Stevens Invitational

HOBOKEN, N.J, - Coast Guard dropped a pair of matches at the first day of the Stevens Invitational in Hoboken New Jersey losing to Richard Stockton 3-1 and New York University 3-0 . The Osprey's won by game scores, 25-16, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22. The Violets beat the Bears by game scores 25-18, 25-14, 25-20.

In the first match Junior Maggie Hine had a match high thirty assists and eight digs for the bears, while sophomore Susan West had twelve kills and junior Ashley Dumont, and freshman Emma Saunders each had nine kills respectively. Freshman Michelle McGill also had a match high 17 digs. 

Richard Stockton was lead by junior Macy Schwartz who hit .600 with a match high sixteen kills. Junior Shannon Clark had four kills, nineteen assists, and nine digs while sophomore Lindsay Schuele also had nine kills in the win. 

The Osprey used a nine point run in the first game to go up 21-9 and never looked back winning the first set handily 25-16.

The Bears had a 22-19 lead in the second set but Richard Stockton scored seven of the final nine points to steal the second game 26-24 and take a two games to none lead.

Coast Guard would cut into the Osprey's lead taking set three 22-25. The Bears scored four of the final five points to break a 21-21 tie and force a fourth set.

Coast Guard ran out to a 12-7 lead early in the fourth set before Richard Stockton rattled off ten of the next eleven points to take a 17-13 lead. The Bears managed to take the lead back at 18-17 but that would be their final lead as the Osprey managed to win the set 25-22 and close out the match three games to one.

In the second match Hine had a team high sixteen assists and seven digs, Saunders and Dumont had eight and seven kills respectively and McGill had ten digs in a losing effort to New York University.

Junior Nicole Frias hit .429 with eleven kills for the Violets while sophomore Gigi Morally and senior Sonya Bray each had nine kills and hit .368 and .389. Junior Emily Moore had seventeen assists and nine digs while sophomore MaTia Hughes had a match high eighteen digs.

In the first set the Bears tied it at 6-6 before New York University scored the next five points and took the lead for good winning the first game 25-18.

In the second game the Violets scored seven of the first nine points of the set and would cruise to a 25-14 win and take a 2-0 lead.

New York University would again use a fast start in the third and final set jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Coast Guard would come back and only trail by one 7-6 before the Violets would score fourteen of the next seventeen points and take a 19-9 lead. Coast Guard attempted to mount a come back closing the gap to 21-19 before New York University finished off the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.  

The Bears return to action tomorrow September 27th at the second day of the Stevens Invitational with matches against Ramapo at 1:00 pm and Stevens at 3:00 pm.
