Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Austin Read and sophomore Kyle Phillips each scored in Coast Guard's 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Johnson and Wales.
The Wildcats started the scoring off early in the game when senior Kyle Metz's throw in dropped into the center of the box. After a scrum in front of the goal the ball fell to senior Dustin Hughes who slotted it into the bottom left hand corner of the goal only 5:36 into the match for the game's first goal.
The Bears answered quickly in the 16th minute as Sophomore Caelan Harshaw sent a cross in from the right side thirty yards out from goal finding Austin Read's head who buried it over the outstretched hands of Johnson and Wales goalie Senior Ryan Dzierzawski. The goal was Read's first of the season and his collegiate career.
Coast Guard continued to dominate the first half as they outshot Johnson and Wales six to one with all of the shots being on goal. Senior John Tarzian had a chance to take the lead midway through the first half as he found himself alone with the goalie on the left side. Tarzian's shot however was blocked out of play by a diving Dzierawski.
For the second game in a row, the Bears waited till ten minutes left in the game to find the game winner. Off a set piece from the left side junior Alex Lane drove the ball into the box. Read managed to get his head to the ball to flick it on to Sophomore Kyle Phillips who put it into the Wildcats goals for the game winner and his first of the year.
Senior Richie Burns made one save on the day for the bears to push their record to 4-0-0, the first time the team has reached this mark since 2008.
Dzierzawski made nine save for Johnson and Wales to drop their record to 1-2-1.
The Bears return to action this Saturday, September 10th when they play rival Merchant Marine. Game time is 11:30.
