Men’s Soccer shutout in evening slugfest at Salve

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. –

On a brisk night in Newport, Coast Guard dropped a 1-0 game vs Salve Regina, the identical score of the women's game earlier in the day. Salve improves to 4-6-4 (1-3-1 NEWMAC) with the win. They will next travel to MIT on Saturday October 24th at 1:00 PM.

The Bears dominated the time of possession early on in the action, putting up four shots to Salve's none in the first 15. The closest opportunities both came from Cole Miller (Annapolis, Md.), fresh off his hat trick performance last week, with a header that drifted just  wide to the left and a screaming shot off his right foot that required a diving save to stop.

Over the next 20 minutes, the defenses took over, slowing down both offenses until Jake Fish (Little Silver, N.J.) found some breathing room that flew high over the cross bar. The Fish shot seemed to open up the floodgates for both squads, as Salve had a prime opportunity shortly after. On the attack, Salve had the ball in a cluster right in front of goal where keeper Samuel Linkous (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) got a piece of the ball and took contact from a Seahawk forward while sophomore Elliot Belton (Mechanicsville, Va.) was there in front of the net for a goal-saving block. After earning back possession, Fish sent another rope at goal, this time blocked.

As the half clock approached 10 minutes to go, each team sent more opportunities toward the goals, Andres Villasana (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) had one blocked and one saved while a Seahawk header in a contortionist effort bent off to the left of the post. With three minutes left on the clock, Michael Porter (Baltimore, Md.) tried to take the ball from a cluster in front of goal and send it towards net but the Salve keeper was there for the save, his fourth of the half.

Right away in the second, there were some fireworks with Salve appearing to score but an offside player nullified the goal. Just under 10 minutes later, they struck first for real this time on a Ty Ferris (Ridgewood, N.J.) assist from almost behind the goal that found Zach Brown (Saundertown, R.I.) in front of goal to head it past the diving Samuel Linkous. Shortly after the goal, the Seahawks got a free kick just mere feet outside of the box but Linkous was there for the save off the free-kick shot. It was deja vu just a minute later with an eerily similar free kick, this time stopped by a wall of Bear defenders.

Fighting to get back in the game, the Bears finally got a ball on goal with 25 to go with a Kai Trager (San Clemente, Calif.) deep shot but the Seahawk keeper was there for the save. As the clock neared 15 to go, Salve kept the pressure on while attempting to play keepaway from CGA, a header from the home team nearly snuck in the top of the goal but skipped off just high, landing on the backside of the net.

With 11:40 to go, Jake Fish took a corner and connected with Kai Trager but again Salve keeper Adonis Santiago (Oakdale, Conn.) was there for the save. Then under 10 to go, it was again Fish as the facilitator, sending a well-hit ball in front of the goal that none of the streaking Bear players could capitalize on. Salve nearly delivered the dagger a minute later but a brilliant Kai Trager clear kept the deficit reachable at just one.

It was a contentious final few with the Bears fighting for every opportunity. Naveen Jayaram (Tampa, Fla.) put a header just wide and other Bears had some potential centering passes to the box but could never strike gold, winding up falling by a score of 0-1.

The Bears fall to 7-5-2 (2-2-1 NEWMAC) with the loss. They will travel to the Wheaton College Lyons on Saturday for a 2:00 PM kickoff.
