Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bears season came to an end Tuesday night as Coast Guard fell to Springfield 3-1 in the NEWMAC quarterfinals.
The Pride jumped all over the Bears early and ran out to a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes
Just over five minutes into the game junior Nicole Fowler broke loose behind the Coast Guard defense, giving her a breakaway with senior goalkeeper Holly Moore. As the junior crossed into the box, she tapped the ball past Moore to open the scoring, giving Springfield a 1-0 advantage.
Just 4:16 later, junior Jessica Miller picked up a loose ball near the midline and broke down the right side. Just before reaching the end line, Miller chipped a cross over the Coast Guard defense to Fowler waiting on the back post who fired a ball underneath the crossbar to extend the Pride's lead to two.
At the 14:44 mark of the first half, freshman Kimberly Quiles gained control of a loose ball on the left side of the field and forwarded a pass to Fowler, who launched a shot over the hands of Moore for her third marker of the contest.
Just 9:10 into the second half, sophomore Alyssa Sato put a shot on goal after she collected a corner kick from senior Lindsay Duplessis. After Boucher made the initial save, the rebound deflected right to sophomore Terry Netusil who found the back of the net to cut the Bears' deficit to two.
Coast Guard continued to pressure the Pride to the end of the game but were unable to put any more goals past freshman Ciara Boucher.
Senior Holly Moore made 11 saves bringing the Bears record to 8-9-2 on the season and 3-7-1 in the NEWMAC. The Coast Guard's win total ties the record with the 2002 team for most wins in a single season.
Moore had an outstanding senior year posting seven shutouts which is tied for the lead in the NEWMAC and set a new school record for most shutouts in a single season. She is also tied for fifth in the conference with eight win, fourth with 87 saves, and has played the minutes out of any goalie in the conference with 1738 minutes and 13 seconds.
Senior Lucy Gillet and freshman Ciara Boucher each made one save in the win. Springfield pushes their record to 11-3-4 overall and 7-1-3 in the conference. The Pride moves on to the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament to play Babson who beat Smith in overtime in the one of the earlier quarterfinal games.
The Bears look to build on this season as they have their top two returning goal scorers returning in junior Caroline Eastman and Junior Sarah Hills. They are also bringing back three of their four starters from their defense in sophomore Moira Meek, sophomore Katie Clark, and junior Hanna Jansson.
The match was the final for seniors Avery Ayres, Julia Mundy, Lindsay Duplessis, Liz Runci, and Holly Moore.
