Bears Rule the Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard won both of their matches today beating both Eastern Connecticut State University and Salve Regina University in straight sets in nonconference play. The Bears beat the Warriors 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 and the Seahawks 25-21, 29-27,25-23

In the first match against Eastern, Junior Ashley Dumont led the way hitting an impressive .579 with 11 kills. Sophomore Susan West hit .400 with five kills. Junior Maggie Hine had 16 assists.

Sophomore Adrianna Mihalek had nine kills for the Warriors and senior Allie Henry contributed 12 assists. Allie Luppi added 17 digs.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and finished on a 9-2 run beating Eastern 25-15.

The Bears used a 5-0 run in the middle of the second set to push their lead to 15-8 as the Warriors never got closer than five points from that point forward. Coast Guard won the second set 25-15.

In the final set the Bears scored six of the first seven points and never looked back beating Eastern 25-16, closing out the match.

In Coast Guard's second match West had 12 kills while hitting .310. Freshman Michelle Hernandez had 18 assists and freshman Michelle McGill added 10 digs.

Senior Jennifer Duggan led the Seahawks with 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior Taylor Violet had 30 assists while Senior Dianna Tauro added 11 digs of her own.

The Bears charged out to a 7-1 lead and withstood a strong run by Salve Regina to win the first set 25-21.

Coast Guard looked to have the game in control at 23-17 but the Seahawks stormed back scoring nine of the next ten points to tie the match at 25. The Bears, however, did not allow Salve Regina to finish their comeback clawing back from down one to win the second set 29-27.

The final set was a back and forth affair as the two teams were either tied or swapped leads 17 times. The Bears closed it out by scoring five of the final seven points to win the third and final set 25-23.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, October 21st when they travel to Boston Massachusetts for a NEWMAC Conference game against Emerson at 7:00 pm.
