Wheaton Rallies to Top Bears in Five

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Deirdre Wilson had 11 kills, 10 digs and 22 assists while sophomore Colleen Koen had a team-high 12 kills leading Wheaton to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Lyons won 25-22, 21-25, 12-25, 25-23, 16-14.

Wheaton snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 13-10 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard had it five-game win streak snapped to drop to 15-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

The Lyons used an early 11-3 run in the first game to take an 11-6 lead and they never looked back to win 25-22.

Coast Guard evened things in the second game by scoring eight straight turning a 10-9 deficit into a 17-10 lead. The Lyons would rally and pull to within 21-20, but the Bears scored four of the final five points for the 25-21 win.

The Bears scored eight straight in game three for a 16-6 lead and Coast Guard scored six of the final seven points for the easy 25-12 lead.

Coast Guard led 19-15 in the fourth game before Wheaton scored seven straight for a 22-19 lead. Coast Guard closed to within 23-22, but the Lyons forced a fifth game with a 25-23 win.

In the five and deciding game, Coast Guard jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Wheaton took its first lead 8-7. Coast Guard appeared to take control with five straight points for a 12-8 lead before the Lyons scored four straight to tie it 12-12. Coast Guard had match point, leading 14-13 but a kill by Wilson tied it 14-14. Following a Coast Guard attack error, Koen registered a kill to win the match.

Junior Ashley Dumont led Coast Guard with 13 kills and five blocks while freshmen Summer Adams and Emma Saunders each finished with nine kills. Junior Maggie Hine had a team-high 11 digs and 22 assists while freshman Michelle Hernandez had ten digs and 16 assists for the Bears.

Juniors Kendall Jacobs and Arieanne Creighton each added ten kills in the win for Wheaton while sophomore Caitlin Hellebrand had a match-high 25 assists for the Lyons.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host Eastern Connecticut at 11 a.m. and Salve Regina at 3 p.m.
