Bears Win NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER, MASS.--(3/16/12)--Junior Riley Beecher pitched six solid innings allowing just one run and five hits while classmate Joe Petry had two hits and reached base all five times as Coast Guard beat Clark 8-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.

Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the first before junior Mike Massaro lined into a triple play to end the inning.

The Bears added an unearned run in the fourth and exploded for four runs in the fifth as senior Eddie Kalankiewicz had an RBI triple, Massaro followed with an RBI double before Dave Wolinski made the score 7-0 with an RBI single.

Beecher (1-0) allowed his only run in the sixth inning. He walked three and struck out four to pick up the win, his first of the season. Senior Nick Peters allowed a run on two hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout to record his first save of the season.

Petry was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and three walks with two runs scored while Kalankiewicz drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Coast Guard evens its record at 5-5 overall while Clark drops to 1-10 on the season.

The teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader in New London on Saturday at noon.
