NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In the first match of the season for Coast Guard Volleyball, the Bears took care of business with a 3-0 win by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-19. The win starts CGA off on the right foot at 1-0 on the campaign. Westfield State, picked to finish 2nd in MASCAC, starts off at 0-1. The Owls will face another NEWMAC team on Friday when they travel to Springfield College.
In their 3-0 win, the Bears were led on attack by a trio of hitters,
Dylan Elferdink (Hernando Beach, Fla.),
Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Cal.), and
Amelia Matson (Mililani, Hawaii), each of whom had five kills. Following them was senior
Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Penn.) with four.
On defense, libero
Courtney Shire (Cape May, N.J.) had a team-high nine digs to go along with two aces and two assists. Setters
Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Holly Davis (Sisters, Ore.) combined for 20 assists and seven digs with Ahokovi adding a kill.
In all, it was a true team effort for Coast Guard with 18 different women seeing action in the game. It was also a big day of firsts for the Bears! First years
Ellie Glover (Colorado Springs, Col.),
Asia Fulp (Seaside, Cal.), and
Ines Iguina (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) each played in their first career collegiate matches and recorded their first career kills, Glover and Iguina notching their first digs as well. Fulp meanwhile, led the Bears team in blocks with three.
The 1-0 Bears will look to stay hot when they host a tri-match with UMass Dartmouth and Endicott on Friday September 4th. UMass Dartmouth started their season off tonight as well with a 3-0 win over Dean, while Endicott will open up on Friday in New London.
