NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In their first home tri-match of the season, Coast Guard volleyball fell to both UMass Dartmouth and Endicott in close five set matchups. With the wins, UMass Dartmouth moves to 2-1 and Endicott starts off at 2-0 on the season. UMass Dartmouth will host Wheaton College(MA) on Tuesday September 8th at 6 pm while Endicott will next host Emerson College on the 8th at 7 pm.
Both matches were as evenly matched as could be, going to the fifth set and ultimately ending at 16-14. Versus UMass Dartmouth, no set was determined by more than six points.
Courtney Shire (Cape May, NJ) had a career high 31 digs while adding six assists. On attack vs the Corsairs, three different Bears had double digit digs,
Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Pa.),
Alaina Corbin (Stafford, Va.), and
Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Cal.) with Lemmer leading the squad in attack percentage at .346.
Supplying that attack was the sophomore setter duo of
Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Holly Davis (Sisters, Ore.) who combined for 43 assists. Davis also tied for the team lead in service aces at three with
Sam Ventimiglia (Key West, Fla.).
Versus Endicott, the Bears again faced a close opponent in a five set match, including a set two thriller which the Bears won 26-24.
Senior hitter
Abby Schweitzer was outstanding in the match vs the Gulls, notching a career-high 16 kills hitting at a .343 percentage while adding five digs. Behind Schweitzer in kills were
Corey Lemmer with 12 and
Dylan Elferdink (Hernando Beach, Fla.) and
Sam Ventimiglia with nine apiece.
Senior libero
Courtney Shire had 22 digs vs the Gulls to lead the Bears,
Ava Ahokovi second on the team with seven while also leading the team in assists with 21.
The Bears will look to bounce back on Tuesday September 8th at home again vs rival Merchant Marine. The match vs KP will be the first of the year for the Academy, and the first chance for CGA to take a lead in the 2026-27 Superintendent's Trophy. Merchant Marine currently sits at 1-0 after a 3-0 sweep of Baruch earlier this week.
