Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Bears firing on all cylinders in 21-4 win over Wellesley

NEW LONDON, Conn. --

Wednesday night, April 8th, Coast Guard women's lacrosse dominance continued as they cruised past visiting Wellesley College at home with a final score of 21-4. The 9-1 start for the Bears sets a new best start through 10 games in program history.

The Bears struck first 37 seconds into the game as senior Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored her first of 7 goals tonight. That goal caused the floodgates to open for Coast Guard. They went on to score 6 more goals in the first quarter while holding Wellesley scoreless.

Everything seemed to click for the Bears as they continued into the second quarter as sophomore Ryleigh Leary (Holden, Mass.) scored on a fastbreak following a terrific save from goalie Kailee Heron (West Islip, N.Y.) on a free position shot. Heron played the entire first half, just allowing 1 goal from the Blue. That goal from Wellesley came after 3 more goals from Coast Guard in the second quarter, and just 1:35 left in the first half. The Bears led 12-1 going into halftime.

In comparison to the rest of the night, the third quarter slowed down as Coast Guard scored only 3 goals compared to Wellesley's 1. The offense was slow despite the majority of penalties occurring in the third quarter, including a 2 player advantage for Wellesley at one point. 4 penalties total in this quarter, and each team would only capitalize on one opportunity. Freshman Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenberg, N.Y.) scored one of the 3 Bears' goals as she finished with 6 goals on the night.

The offense picked back up in the fourth quarter as Wellesley scored 29 seconds into the quarter to make it a 15-3 game. Coast Guard went on to extend their lead as they answered back with 3 goals of their own, including another man-up goal. The Blue found the back of the net one more time this evening with 6:10 left to play. However it would not be nearly enough to stop the Bears from scoring another 3 goals. One of those last 3 Bears' goals came from an unlikely player. Senior defender Rowan Walsh (Hampstead, Md.) scored her first ever collegiate goal with 48 seconds left in the game to make the final score 21-4

Coast Guard women's lacrosse NEWMAC play will pick up again this weekend when they travel to Norton, Mass. to face off against Wheaton College Sunday, April 12th for a 12pm EST start.
