NORTON, Mass. —
The United States Coast Guard Academy women's lacrosse team handed an 18-10 defeat to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Wheaton College on Sunday, April 12th. The Bears were able to pull away from their hosts with a 7-0 effort in the second quarter.
Coast Guard improves to 10-1 on the season and 7-0 in the NEWMAC with their seventh consecutive win, while the Lyons move to 10-4 overall and 5-3 against league opponents after the loss breaks their four-game win streak. They'll look to bounce back on Wednesday, April 15th, when they travel for more NEWMAC action at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (11-3, 7-0 NEWMAC).
The Bears saw three players record at least five points, led by
Abby McAllister's (Pleasantville, N.Y.) 12 on six goals and six assists. The total marks the second time this season and third time in McAllister's career that she has reached the mark, which stands as a program record for points in a single game.
McAllister was followed by a stellar nine-point showing from
Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenberg, N.Y.), made up on seven goals and two assists.
Rileigh Leary (Holden, Mass.) had five points on two goals and three assists, while
Isabella Judge (Buffalo, N.Y.) recorded a hat trick to fill out Coast Guard's point-getters.
Kailee Heron (West Islip, N.Y.) made seven saves en route to the win.
Pacing the Lyons was a four points from
Jessica Chamberlain, getting them on a hat trick and an assist.
Sara Spielman also recorded a hat trick, and
Bridget McDwyer rounded out Wheaton's multi-point performances with two assists. Five more Lyons scored or assisted on the afternoon.
Judge got the scoring started at 13:51 with an unassisted goal before Chamberlain evened it on her own almost a minute later during a woman-up opportunity. The two sides traded scores through the rest of the first and headed into the next quarter tied at four.
Leary found the back of the net without help and 12:41 in the second, and the floodgates opened from there. By halftime, the Bears held an 11-4 lead with Leary and McAllister scoring or assisting on five of those goals. The Bears took 16 shots and didn't turnover the ball once during the quarter, while the Lyons were held to three shots while turning the ball over five times.
The game was more even over the remaining two quarters, with Coast Guard outscoring their hosts by a 7-6 margin. The Bears' defense forced 20 turnovers from their hosts.
Coast Guard women's lax will look to keep their winning streak going on Wednesday the 15th at NEWMAC opponent Clark University (3-9, 1-6 NEWMAC). The Bears were victors by a 17-1 margin in last season's meeting on Cadet Memorial Field.
