NEW LONDON, Conn. —
United States Coast Guard Academy junior cadet-athletes
Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.) and
Abriana Schmutz (Marysville, Ohio) have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Cadet-Athletes of the Week, presented b y First Command, for their athletics performances during the week ending on Monday, April 4th.
Bonetto was undefeated in singles and doubles across a 1-1 week for Bears tennis. The junior secured 6-4 and 6-1 wins at #1 doubles with partner
Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) over Clark and Salve Regina, respectively, to improve the duo's record to 3-2 during the 2026 season. Bonetto also defeated both schools' top singles players, defeating Clark 2-1 (4-6, 6-0, 6-1) and Salve Regina 2-0 (6-2, 6-2) to improve to 3-2 in solo play.
Schmutz recorded hits in all four games of softball's 2-2 week. She started out with a 1-for-3 effort with an RBI in game one of the team's Tuesday doubleheader at Wesleyan University before going 2-for-3 in the second game. The junior captain recorded a pair of two-hit games in the team's pair of mercy-rule wins against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Salve Regina on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a double in game one and 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in game two.
Bonetto and Bears tennis returns to action today, April 6th in further conference play at Springfield College (6-5, 2-0 NEWMAC), while Schmutz and softball are gearing up for a trio of league doubleheaders at Wellesley College (8-7, 1-3 NEWMAC) on Wednesday, April 8th; against Wheaton College (11-7, 2-2 NEWMAC) at home on Friday, April 10th; and at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (18-0, 6-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday, April 11th.
